Fallout 3 is the long-coming addition to the post-apocalyptic cult classic series. Set in the ruins of Washington, D.C., two centuries after a nuclear holocaust, the game’s protagonist emerges from fallout shelter Vault 101 to resolve the mystery of his father’s disappearance. The game promises a wasted world open to exploration, with multiple multiple approaches and deep character customization.
The Fallout franchise, originally developed by Interplay, has always featured open-world storytelling rife with the bleak humor of “Dr. Strangelove.” The games meld 1950’s era nuclear paranoia, pop-culture references and anarchic savagery.
Ten years after the release of the second game, Bethesda intends to continue the series’ long traditions in a graphically-advanced realm. Their game has long been touted as “Oblivion with guns” by critics, but early reviews and previews say that Bethesda has successfully adapted Fallout to modern platforms, albeit without some of the pop-culture humor that made Fallout 2 so entertaining.
